Student Senate: President says absence will have minimal effect on 1st meeting

When Student Senate convenes its first meeting of the quarter at 7:15 tonight, its president will be absent.

President Robert Leary is attending the annual American Philological Association conference in Anaheim, Calif, from today to Jan. 9. Leary has an interview for a summer program through the

association.

I feel terrible (for missing the meeting)

Leary said, though he added that his absence should not present a problem for the rest of the senate.

99 percent of senate's work is done outside of the general body meeting.

For the rest of senate, the meeting will be business as usual.

Vice President Emily Bacha will stand for Leary as president pro tempore, presiding over the meeting using Leary's senate procedures.

The senate will discuss a proposal to give offices to student trustees, as well as vote in new senators for several absent offices.

We filled all of the vacancies over break Leary said.

Bacha said Matt Tokarsky will serve as her proxy for vice president during the meeting, ensuring that Leary's absence is in compliance with the procedures governing Student Senate meetings.

When a senator, commissioner or executive cannot attend a general body meeting, he or she must send a proxy in his or her place. Senators leaving for extended periods, such as studying abroad for a quarter, choose proxies to act for them over a longer term. The proxy must be another senator, commissioner or intern working for senate.

Tonight's meeting will be the first in at least four years without the president in attendance, Bacha said.

Leary said he is confident the meeting will still be productive without him.

I feel I am leaving senate in good hands with (Bacha) Leary said, I really don't think it's a problem.
