Swimming and Diving: Bobcats swim ahead with two straight wins

Ohio started 2010 by recording wins over both Youngstown State and Denison University.

In a dominating performance, the Bobcats defeated Youngstown State 146-94 and Denison 175-125.

Coming off a month-long break from competition, the Bobcats showed little rust in their first two meets of the year.

Coming off that time of pure training we looked really good

coach Greg Werner said. A lot of the things we've been working on over the holiday training seemed to be put into play over the weekend. I'm really happy with how we did.

Friday, the Bobcats won the first three events of the meet at Youngstown, and then proceeded to take first place in the final nine to finish off the Penguins.

Saturday's meet at the Aquatics Center started well and ended even better for the Bobcats. After gaining a 58-35 lead after five events, the Big Red put itself back into the competition by placing first and third in the 200-yard fly.

The Bobcats soon found themselves back in control after sweeping the 50-yard freestyle event. Freshman Anne Donovan took an early lead and led the Bobcat charge with a time of 23.63.

Bobcat diver MaryRose Hillstrom broke the school record in the 1-meter dive with a score of 298.05.

I was just looking to improve on the little things that we had worked on during winter training Hillstrom said. To accomplish what I did was almost surreal.

Hillstrom, only a freshman, also won the 3-meter diving event, winning with a score of 294.40. With her two dives, Hillstrom qualified in both events for the pre-national competition, where divers can earn berths to the NCAA Championships.

I always wanted to break the record before my senior year she said, I didn't come into today looking to do anything this big.

Both Hillstrom and senior Amy Bromberg's performances were noteworthy, Werner said.

To have both of these girls do so well is great

he said. To be a competitive team you need to have both swimming and diving. It looks like we're developing a pretty reliable crew in both.
