Being the starting point guard as a freshman might appear to be a daunting task.
But considering where Ashley Fowler comes from, it's no surprise that she is ready for the role.
Fowler played for Mount Notre Dame in Cincinnati, a high school known for its basketball success.
During her prep career, she was a starter on all four of the Cougars' Division I state title teams and finished her career with a 101-10 record.
I saw a lot of tough competition in high school
Fowler said. I think that it just helped me be more under control and handle pressure more here in college.
Coach Semeka Randall saw Fowler as the type of player she wants to build her program with at Ohio (4-10, 0-1 MAC).
Now, she has asked the young guard to take the reins of the offense. The job comes with much responsibility, but Fowler has performed well so far.
She leads the team in assists (42) while also playing the second-most minutes (30.4 per game).
It's just exciting that I can come in and be cheered on by my teammates Fowler said. It's been fun to contribute with the team we have.
Her teammates are already comfortable with Fowler at point guard, and they know she can deal with the difficult assignment.
I don't think pressure bothers her guard Jennifer Bushby said. You look at where she came from
winning four state titles.
Pressure's nothing to that kid, Bushby said.
Fowler has shown glimpses of confidence not normally seen from a first-year player. Against Clemson
she hit a 3-pointer to tie the game late and sank the layup that sent the game into overtime.
Both Fowler and her coach know many things she can improve on
such as aggressiveness and ball control.
Really for her and the process of going through her first year is how to grow up and learn what college basketball is about, Randall said.
Fowler struggled in her first conference game against Kent State and will face a tough Bowling Green (11-4
1-0 MAC) team Saturday.
Taking on the Mid-American Conference may seem overwhelming for Fowler
but after what she's been through already
she seems up to the task.
She's steady and already has a good understanding of the game, Randall said. And the most important thing is that she's a winner.
