Indoor Track: 'Cats rested, ready for MAC Championships

It all comes down to this: The members of the Mid-American Conference will collide in Mount Pleasant, Mich., for the MAC Championships starting today.

For the past couple of meets, Ohio coach Clay Calkins has rested his top athletes in order to keep them fresh for the bigger meets.

This strategy is widely used among track and field coaches, he said.

Most of the schools rest their top athletes before the big meet

so it is no secret Calkins said.

Our success will depend on the condition of our athletes versus the condition of their athletes.

All season long, the Bobcats have relied on the throwers, distance runners and jumpers to gain points at the meets.

These events are key for us we have to focus on these areas and get the points

Calkins said.

This weekend, Calkins plans to keep some of the Bobcats out of the open events and slot them in the relays.

Cathy Udeani, a jumper and one of the key athletes for Ohio success this weekend, is confident that team can perform on the MAC's biggest stage.

Our distance and field events should shine as usual

Udeani said. Competition will be tough on the track

but I can see people hitting a bunch of personal records this weekend.

The action will begin today with the pentathlon and heptathlon, and then moves on to field events. Preliminary running events will conclude today's session.
