I'd like to clarify the situation concerning the USA Today's Collegiate Readership Program as it seems to have stirred up mixed feedback. First, no decision has been made to officially install the program here at Ohio University, nor will it be made this quarter. A free pilot program may be introduced in the spring, but this does not guarantee the official establishment of the program. Ultimately, no decision will be made without student input, which will include feedback from students outside the school of journalism.
Student Senate, as well as the USA Today representative, are well aware of the budget situation here at OU and that news resources are available through modern technology as well as in select reserves on campus (such as in Alden and Scripps' Lasher Learning center). Those realities will all factor into the final decision to implement or forego the program at Ohio University.
Secondly, I'd like to encourage students to continue expressing their opinions; that is the only way an informed decision reflecting student interests can be made. Feel free to share your thoughts and concerns with student senators in Baker 305 (Student Senate's office) or e-mail Matt Beddingfield, the Scripps College of Communication senator and the current Senate liaison with the USA Today representative, at mn448606@ohiou.edu.
Emily Shuki is a senior studying journalism and Student Senate treasurer.
