Senate approves resolutions unanimously

Courtney Hessenauer • For The Post

Faculty Senate passed two resolutions at last night's meeting, without debate among the senators.

The first was a resolution to establish drop, add and withdrawal deadlines under the new semester calendar that will begin fall 2012.

Previous complaints included the possibility of a 15-week semester with a four-week break, but faculty members raised concerns that the longer semester would interfere with summer research opportunities.

Faculty Senate unanimously decided to approve the resolution specifying deadlines for dropping, adding and withdrawing from classes within the 14-week semester. The exact times of all of the deadlines will be determined by the Registrar's office.

The other resolution, which also passed unanimously, was intended to correct the promotion and tenure appeal process in the faculty handbook.

Last year, Faculty Senate decided to adjust the promotion and tenure process in the faculty handbook, allowing departments to take another look at an appeal once it was approved by Faculty Senate. Before that, Senate's approval would move an appeal up to the next highest administrator.

In last night's meeting, Senate adopted a resolution to have similar policies for the deans and provost, allowing them an additional opportunity to review an appeal after it is approved by Faculty Senate.

Both resolutions passed without dispute and will await the signature of Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit.
