A new study has found 60 percent of Americans think colleges today are more concerned about money than their students’ educational experiences, according to a New York Times report.
Two organizations, Public Agenda and the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, polled 1,000 Americans in December to ask about higher education policy.
The study found 55 percent of people believe college is necessary for success, but only 28 percent of people think college is available to the majority of qualified students.
Cost seemed to be a major factor in that perception, as 83 percent of respondents said they think students have to borrow too much money to go to college. Almost two-thirds of people said universities should use federal stimulus money to keep tuition costs down.
