An Ohio University junior appeared in Athens Municipal Court yesterday for injuring a police officer.
Police arrested Joseph W. Carl, 21, of Chester, Conn., outside Tony's Tavern on West State Street at about 2 a.m. Saturday for assaulting another man, according to a report from Athens Police Department.
During his arrest, Carl, who is studying management and strategic leadership, kicked Lt. Ralph Harvey in the crotch and injured Harvey's foot and right knee, according to court documents.
Police also arrested Carl for resisting arrest and causing injury to a police officer.
Carl spent about 16 hours in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, according to booking records.
Assault of a police officer is a fourth-degree felony. A fourth-degree felony can carry up to 18 months in prison, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
Harvey was not available for comment.
