Ohio University Student Senate will host a discussion on the value of Intercollegiate Athletics at its meeting tonight.
Andy Burnette, a senator for East Green, said the discussion is aimed at getting more clear student input on just how much students care about athletics.
McDavis said he won't cut the Athletics budget
but yet with our recent budget survey students have said Athletics is one thing they can do without Burnette said, referring to a recent student survey collecting input on students' priorities for the university.
The survey, which was dispensed via e-mail and in Baker University Center, drew 188 responses for Cost cutting and revenue generating ideas. Of them, 42 specifically mentioned cutting Athletics budgets.
Burnette said the discussion will focus on Athletics overall but that football should receive particular attention.
Football out-budgets the entire female athletic program
Burnette said, adding that the total athletic budget will be made available during the discussion for senators.
Still, he said he wants the discussion to remain neutral, though he said he knew people were very polarized.
I personally believe Athletics enhance the first-year experience
Burnette said. I don't know if how much we put into it is how much we're getting out of it.
Senate President Robert Leary said the discussion is part of a larger overall conversation senate is having about the budget.
The discussion will be on where does Athletics fit into students' values at OU
Leary said.
Burnette said senate would also be hosting a student forum in the coming weeks that deals specifically with Athletics and what value students place on them.
