The members of The Terrible Twos know that their name is a misnomer that makes people think they have two or four members instead of five. They are OK with that, though, as they have kept the name since the band formed in 2004.
I think I said it at like four in the morning one night in the rehearsal space
said Chris Campbell, who plays guitar, bass and sings for the group. And our first show was coming up in two weeks and the other band was making a flyer and we needed a name. ... Now we're stuck with it.
The Detroit-based band will bring its metal-influenced punk to the Union tonight to play a show with We March and Whale Zombie. According to Campbell, this will be the eighth or ninth time The Terrible Twos has played Athens.
The people (in Athens) are super cool he said. It seems like it's a smaller group of people that go out to the shows
but everyone's into watching bands. They're not just sitting at the bar drinking.
The band originally came to Athens because Zach Fuller and a couple of the other members of We March saw The Terrible Twos in Detroit and invited it to Southeastern Ohio.
That led to Athens-based Blackout Booking becoming the band's official agent, which eventually led to shows at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. The Terrible Twos has played the fest the past two years and plans to play it again this year.
It's kind of fun; it's kind of a chaotic pain
Campbell said, explaining that the band played eight shows in four days last year. I just remember being really burned out and tired. By the time we all had some free time to go hang out
we were all too tired to care.
The band refused to say no when someone asked it to take a stage, often playing unofficial venues instead of taking part in official SXSW events.
A lot of people that come to see us aren't gonna pay $200 for the wristband
Campbell said. Also
the vibe is just better. It's not some lame bar that doesn't even have shows the rest of the year.
