I want to commend The Post for publishing Jeff Shipley's column about CPAC and the current state of conservatism in America. Unfortunately, I find his title a bit unnerving. Despite a conservative resurgence
a Republican takeover isn't guaranteed in November.
Yes, the Tea Party movement will mean more conservatives will vote, and no one can deny that some Democratic seats will probably be lost, but conservatives don't dominate the country. Only about 42 percent of the country can be called conservative, and there is no real consensus about which way the independents are leaning right now. Most young voters (aged 19-25) are liberal, and if they vote in November in the same numbers they did in 2008, a complete Republican takeover can be avoided.
Put simply, liberals do not have to accept that the Republicans will regain control, or that their victories will be substantive enough to make a real difference. If enough young voters come out to the polls and vote, the Democrats will have more time to actually get things done. I personally hope they do lose a seat or two, just so they can realize they need to pass things to stay in control, but I'm not ready for the Republicans to lead again.
