Student Senate has pushed back the application deadline for what is arguably the most influential student position at Ohio University, having received only one application for next year's open student trustee position.
The Student Trustee Selection Committee has extended the application deadline from March 8 to March 12 for applications for the non-voting position on OU's Board of Trustees.
The applicant would replace senior trustee Chauncey Jackson, whose term expires at the end of this year. The new student trustee would serve alongside sophomore Kyle Triplett, who was selected last year.
Student Senate Vice President Emily Bacha, who leads the search committee, said the selection process has been smooth so far.
We wanted to do one last advertising push
Bacha said. Most people are waiting for the deadline. I think we'll receive most of our applications at that time.
Bacha said she has spoken with 10 to 15 people who have expressed interest in applying, and that the first application was received this week. She said she hoped the new deadline would allow interested people more time to put together their resumes.
The application for the selection committee itself was extended as well after no one applied except for Post Editor in Chief Ashley Lutz, who later declined an invitation to join the committee.
We've had a lot of opinions and input from the two current trustees as well as former trustee Tracy Kelly said Patty Roberts, Senate's chief of staff.
Roberts said the committee has garnered interest from students at branch campuses as well as student nominations from faculty members.
Roberts said she hopes recent budget forums will not eclipse the selection process. Senate conducted a number of forums this quarter dealing with OU's budget shortfall.
Still, budgetary concerns will be the biggest obstacle the new trustee will face over the next two years, Triplett said.
We're trying to get to a point where we're operating on a healthier budget line Triplett said.
He said the selection process was nonetheless very rewarding.
You get to learn so much about this University - how it operates and its inner workings
Triplett said. Even if I hadn't gotten the position
it would have been worth it.
Bacha said the committee would review the applications during spring break and will conduct interviews and make final recommendations during the first and second weeks of Spring Quarter.
