Drawing on the success of short comedic sketches, such as Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts and College Humor, Athens Video Works will premiere a new sketch comedy show, Baby Mountain, 9 p.m. tomorrow in Seigfred Hall's Mitchell Auditorium.
I just want to make something that we're happy with
and that people at least laugh at once every five minutes said cast member Zachary Coleman, an Ohio University sophomore.
Baby Mountain's 30-minute pilot episode consists of nine comedy sketches. Although AVW hosts another comedy show, Friday's Live, sophomore Alex Winfrey pitched Baby Mountain because it films out-of-studio scenes not based on current events and allows for a wider breadth of situational comedy, Winfrey said.
The same way as short stories there is an art to it
said Winfrey, a sophomore studying video production. Not that our show is very literary.
AVW accepted the show, but does not yet have a planned airdate on Channel 25 with AVW's other productions. The cast and crew plans to create two more shows this quarter, said Winfrey.
Six actors and five crew members work together on Baby Mountain.
Everyone does everything. There is no one to blame but yourself if it sucks
said cast member Eudora Peterson, a sophomore studying broadcast journalism.
The cast has writers' meetings Thursday evenings and films Saturdays and Sundays, as well as some weekday evenings, said Winfrey, who wrote the majority of the show's content along with a writing team.
The whole cast is one big family. One big incestuous family
said freshman cast member Joe Lalonde, laughing.
Though the cast is close, they sometimes struggle because of lack of experience, said Peterson.
I hope people can see the potential
said Peterson. I'm not going to lie and pretend this is the perfect show with the funniest cast and the best writing and the wittiest director
because it's not. But I really hope that people can see that
hey
if you stick around a little bit longer it could be.
Though none of the cast members are sure whether they will pursue comedy in the future, comedy is a large part of each of their lives.
I want people to come
because comedy is great ... it's really not that big here
