Ohio University students who want to go green with their makeup don't need to wear emerald eye shadow and lime lipstick - they just need to buy beauty products made from natural ingredients.
April is Earth Month, and for students wanting to switch to environmentally friendly makeup, there are many options in Athens, such as products from Raphael's Aveda Concept Salon and Spa, 18 S. Court St.
In Aveda products, all the materials, including containers and oils, are recyclable. The company produces a base makeup powder of loose minerals that can be returned into soil, versus powder matte, which contains more chemicals. The oils used in the makeup are extracted from plants all over the world, said Sara Schumm, an employee at the Aveda salon.
Aveda has also used wind energy to power its makeup factories since the business began 30 years ago, Schumm said.
Another local store in Athens that offers environmentally friendly makeup options is CVS Pharmacy, 32 S. Court St.
It is mainly Neutrogena
Physicians Formula Almay and Wet n Wild and these brands have bare minerals and other options
said Kayla Oberholzer, a CVS employee.
Even though green makeup is readily available in Athens, some students said they are too stuck in their ways to consider different makeup options.
I wouldn't consider it because I'm pretty brand loyal
said Julia Huber, a junior studying restaurant, hotel and tourism. If I was looking for something different and I heard it worked well
I would choose it.
There are other reasons that prohibit consumers from making the switch away from conventional makeup, Schumm said.
Price is probably one of the biggest thing to hold them back from these products
but the makeup does last long
Schumm said.
Aveda products can cost up to $20 more than Wet n Wild, Almay and other drugstore brands.
Other students said they are open to the possibility of change.
I use the mineral powders and I think if I were to switch
it would be something I would consider
said Emily Drake, a junior studying education.
