The Democratic Party candidates for the open Athens County Commissioner seat found more similarities than differences at a forum last night orchestrated by the Athens County League of Women Voters.
Incumbent Lenny Eliason, who has served as a commissioner for about 12 years, cited his history working on Democratic campaigns at all levels.
If you don't go and argue your case (at the state and national levels) on behalf of the citizens
you're not going to be able to be effective. ... You're representing the same people they do just closer to home he said.
Challenger Miki Brooks, owner of FullBrooks Cafe in Nelsonville, called upon her life experiences as a former teacher, realtor and small business owner.
I have been an educator for 30 years
where I learned conflict resolution. As a councilor I learned how to listen ... I know how to multi-task and how to manage problems
she said.
Both Eliason and Brooks focused on their opinions of what is best for the county.
They discussed the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District's five-year plan and whether or not the two counties will work together or separately on the project.
Part of the problem is that you have to make sure that the plan allows for the best interest in the communities ... if we have to split up
we have to develop a plan for the single district
Eliason said.
Brooks, who is not involved in developing the plan, said that she would pursue the course that would most benefit Athens County, but said she does not burn bridges.
I understand that relationships (with other counties) are important.
However ... it needs to be done in a way that if we do exit it is done gracefully
she said.
Another topic constituents said they are concerned about is job creation within the county.
Everybody is interested in how we bring jobs to the county. I believe we need to look at what is here in the county...for instance
tourism. We have beauty in this county that we don't have elsewhere
Brooks said.
Eliason focused on expanding on existing businesses in the area and creating new prospects for Athens.
(The commissioners) are working with Diagnostic Hybrids to develop a medical lab...when you look at the lab business for hospitals and health care it's a huge business out there
he said.
