Post Letter: Kent State shooting reinforces civic duty

As we approach the anniversary of the Kent State shootings, we remember that freedom does not come without a high price. This May 4 marks the 40th anniversary of the day that four young people protesting America's involvement in the Vietnam War were killed, and nine others were wounded by National Guard troops who had been called to the campus to help contain anti-war protests.

May 4 is also the date of Ohio's primary election this year. We are fortunate to live in a country with so many rights and freedoms protected by the government, but our government has one essential requirement: participation. The easiest and most important way of participating is voting. By casting your vote, you are helping to determine who will make our laws, run our country and protect our freedoms.

This May 4, remember the tragedy that took place four decades ago at Kent State University and exercise your right as an American citizen to vote. Every year, millions of Americans choose not to vote. Please help reduce this number, keeping in mind that elected officials have immense leverage in shaping the world we live in. Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and remember to bring along a valid form of identification. This can be a current and valid photo ID or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check or paycheck.
