Softball: Juniors lead weekend series split in Michigan

A look at the box score might suggest all the Bobcats needed to sweep Eastern Michigan were Emily Wethington and Melissa Bonner.

The juniors pitched back-to-back complete games and combined for nine hits as Ohio (11-26, 6-4 Mid-American Conference) won, 11-2 and 6-1, in Friday's doubleheader in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Bonner, who has logged the most innings of any Ohio pitcher this season, allowed six hits, gave up one earned run and struck out 11 Eagles (13-22, 3-7 MAC) in the Bobcats' 11-2 win to begin the day.

Wethington gave up nine hits but just one earned run in game two, a 6-1 victory. Her performance on the mound paled in comparison to what she contributed at the plate, though.

Wethington went 5-8 Friday, notching four RBIs in game one and three in game two, which came on a third-inning, three-run homer.

In game one, Eastern Michigan took a 1-0 lead into the top of the sixth. After a single and a walk to start the inning, Bonner singled to tie the game.

The next two batters, junior Paige Kemezis and senior Shalene Petrich, drew walks. With the bases loaded, Wethington knocked in all three runners with a double to right field.

Ohio tacked on one more run in the sixth and four more in the seventh to seal the win.

Game two was also lopsided. Though the Eagles scored in the first inning, they blanked for the rest of the game.

With two on and two outs in the third, Petrich sparked the Bobcats with an RBI single. The next batter was Wethington, who went deep to left field to cap off Ohio's four-run inning.

The Bobcats' next two games did not go as well.

They lost to Central Michigan (21-13, 8-4 MAC), 3-1, Saturday thanks to a three-run inning in which the Chippewas scored off three Ohio errors.

Ohio had no luck against Central Michigan's pitching, managing just two hits and two walks on the day.

The lone bright spot of the game came in the seventh inning, when Petrich tied Ohio's all-time record for runs scored.

Game two played out in much the same way, as the Bobcats again lost 3-1. Ohio did not score until the seventh inning, but it was not enough.

Coach Jodi Hermanek could not be reached for comment.
