Women's Golf: Bobcats ready for The Big One

Coming off their best performance in the past calendar year, the Bobcats look to be hitting their stride at the perfect time.

They head off to Fishers, Ind. today for the year-end Mid-American Conference Tournament, the last and largest event on their schedule.

Ohio has already made the four-and-a-half hour trip to The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club once this season, finishing a lowly 15th out of 16 teams at the MAC Preview back in mid-October.

Putting drives on to the fairway was the Bobcats' biggest problem then, but they seem to have straightened things out recently, including a second-placed finish at last weekend's Falcon Invitational.

Ohio has been right in the middle of things in recent years at the championships, finishing fifth, fifth, sixth and seventh the last four years, respectively.

But after stringing together three strong tournaments in a row leading up to this weekend, including beating out several MAC opponents at each, Ohio is certainly a contender to push for their second podium finish in two weeks.

Kent State, however, has held a stranglehold on the tournament since the MAC started a women's golf championship in 1999, winning every single title, including a dominant 39-stroke victory last year. And, yet again, the Golden Flashes look to be the favorites to extend their streak to 12 straight this weekend.

Golden Flashes sophomore Mercedes Germino will be looking to defend her individual title from 2009, while sophomore Megan Weaver, Ohio's most consistent golfer throughout the season, will also look for a high showing in the individual standings whilst leading the Bobcat charge.

The nine teams will begin action today with two rounds in the morning and afternoon and continue with another round tomorrow before finishing up with the fourth and final round Sunday morning.
