Arrests rise with the dawn of Greek Week

Officers from Athens Police Department arrested two people, responded to five noise complaints and shut down two fraternity parties yesterday - the first day of Greek Week.

It was discovered that 'Greek Week' had started and there were many parties and people out

said Athens Police Lt. Dave Williams in an e-mail to local media outlets.

The release did not specify if all of the problems were related to Greek Week.

Police encountered five intoxicated individuals, two of whom were arrested Monday evening, according to the e-mail. Two intoxicated nineteen-year old women were transported to the hospital.

Officers also shut down two fraternity parties because of noise, according to the e-mail.

Ohio University Student Senate President Robert Leary said he was surprised to hear about the problems especially because he was at the Greek Week Airband competition last night.

The girl who is in charge of Greek Week even got on stage and said no alcohol is tolerated at this event and advocated for responsible behavior he said.

Student Senate has been supportive of Greek Life expanding and Leary said he has heard positive feedback from the expansion.

The reporting officer was unavailable for comment, and Carol Preston, the assistant director for Greek Life, did not return phone calls.

Greek Week continues until Friday.
