Baseball: Bobcats to host Bulls, high-achieving alumni

They may be past their prime on the diamond, but they'll at least be watching their younger counterparts tomorrow at the stadium named after their coach.

Members of the 1960, '65 and '70 baseball teams will be on hand for tomorrow's game against Buffalo as part of Alumni Day at Bob Wren Stadium.

It should be a good weekend

coach Joe Carbone said. Ninety percent of the guys that were on the (1970) team will be back. We're going to have a big group.

Carbone captained the Bobcats to the 1970 College World Series during his senior year. The Bobcats finished fourth in the tournament - the best-ever finish by a Mid-American Conference school. The 1960, '65 and '70 teams all won MAC Championships and berths to the NCAA Tournament.

The alumni will meet for an 11 a.m. cookout, during which players can get back in touch with each other, Carbone said. Then they will stick around to watch this year's Bobcats play the second of three games against Buffalo.

The Bulls (20-23, 6-12 MAC) come to town following last weekend's series win against Akron. They bring both speed and starting pitching - a combination Ohio (14-30, 7-11 MAC) has seen throughout the season.

It seems like everybody we play steals a lot of bases Carbone said. But I will say this: we have done a good job of shutting down people's running games.

Catcher Kris McDonough is third in the MAC in gunning down opposing base snatchers. He has retired 14 of 45 from behind the plate.

Jason Moulton (1-3) and Seth Streich (1-4) will start on the mound today and tomorrow.

As for Sunday's starter?

I call it 'WEIL' - whoever else is left Carbone said.

Bryce Butt will pitch in relief because he threw two innings in Ohio's loss to Eastern Kentucky Wednesday.

We just haven't had our third (starter) be real consistent

Carbone said.

Sometimes we've started some guys who have done a good job one time

start them the next time and they don't do a good job. So we give somebody else a chance.

This is the last time the Bobcats will face a MAC opponent at home this season.

The next two weekends they will visit Akron and Miami before going to Chillicothe, Ohio, for the conference tournament.

It's a lot tougher to win on the road than it is at home

Carbone said. It's important that we have a good weekend.
