Neither cats nor steel fare well when wet, so the Panthers and Bobcats decided to stay indoors yesterday instead of meeting on a soggy day in the Steel City.
The contest was canceled about 11:15 a.m. yesterday, just before Ohio was scheduled to leave for Pittsburgh.
When it rains in Athens
it heads east coach Joe Carbone said. College coaches aren't real smart but we are smart enough to make a decision before we take off.
The game will not be rescheduled. Both squads are busy making their final strides toward their respective conference tournaments.
We don't waste money
and we get to class as much as possible
Carbone said.
The rain in Athens kept the Bobcats off the practice field as well. Carbone said pitchers would watch game film while hitters take swings in the batting cages in addition to watching video.
Ohio (17-30, 10-11 Mid-American Conference) will stay in town to face Youngstown State tonight. The Penguins (20-26, 8-11 Horizon League) have finished their home schedule and will wrap up the regular season with nine straight road games. They dropped two of three games during a trip to Cleveland State last weekend.
Youngstown State was scheduled to visit Toledo yesterday, but that game was canceled as well.
Senior outfielder Tom Clayton leads the Penguins with a .452 batting average, fifth-best in NCAA Division I.
Youngstown State is hitting over .300 as a team and has two players with at least 12 stolen bases, Carbone said.
Ohio had planned to use its two mid-week games to prep its pitching staff for the upcoming weekend. But even though the Bobcats will only have one contest before facing the Zips, Carbone is not concerned about the situation on the mound.
At this stage in the season
it's not a big deal as far as preparation for Akron
he said. We'll see how the game goes
but not as many guys will get to pitch.
Brent Choban, who was scheduled to start in Pittsburgh, will instead start today against the Penguins.
