Cracking Down on Fests: 95 arrested at weekend fests

It was standing room only yesterday morning in the Athens County Municipal Court as Palmerfest revelers faced the music for their party fouls.

During the weekend 95 people were arrested - 31 at Palmerfest and 13 at Palmer Place Fest. Liquor Control agents arrested 51 more; 38 of those arrested were Ohio University students.

Police shut down Palmerfest Saturday night after revelers started a fire in the street.

Palmer Place Fest was shut down after the apartment complex's management called police because students were throwing bottles at security guards.

Friday's Palmer Place Fest resulted in two women being charged with assault.

Allison Richard, 20, an Ohio State University student, was charged with assaulting a police officer, a fourth degree felony. In addition to the felony, Richard was also charged with two misdemeanors: obstructing official business and trespassing. She pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanors. Richard is currently out on bond for the felony charge.

Richard's bail and bond amounts were not reported in court, and Municipal Court clerks said they were too busy to allow Post reporters to review the complaints or make copies for the press.

Jessica Tekavec, 20, an OU student, was charged with assault, a first degree misdemeanor. She pleaded not guilty. Tekavec spent nine minutes in jail, according to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail's website.

Three people, including one student, were arrested on assault charges during Palmerfest.

William Geaman, a 19-year-old OU student, was charged with the assault of a police officer, a fourth degree felony. He is being held on $50,000 bail at the jail.

Chad Elliot Hess, 19, was charged with attempted assault of a police officer, a fourth degree felony.

Nick Messina, 23, was charged with assault, a first degree misdemeanor. He pleaded not guilty and was released for good behavior.

Christopher Hanson, a 21-year-old OU student, was arrested at Palmerfest for aggravated rioting, a fourth degree felony. Hanson is being held on $100,000 bail at the jail.

A first degree misdemeanor has a possible maximum sentence of 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. A fourth degree felony has a possible maximum sentence of 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
