Final days draw near for graphic designers

The Ohio University Art Gallery in Seigfred Hall is not enough to contain the creativity of the graduating graphic design class; the exhibit has spread into the lobby.

The 2010 Graphic Design BFA Exhibition, where 16 seniors will display their final thesis, opens tonight.

The tight-knit group have been working on their projects since last May and chose ideas pertaining to their preferred line of work.

I think there is large range of work from the traditional to the cutting edge

said Sherry Blankenship, associate professor of graphic design in the School of Art.

Projects include an investigation into the color pink and an exercise in logo design for a new NFL team.

Senior Michael Kochersperger will use an interactive workstation to display his work inspired by '60s band The Doors.

The whole point is to sort of revise album artwork and I would say today it's been lost because it's so digital Kochersperger said. You are not getting that physical form of art. The music industry and designers in general are trying to save that form of art.

Although pink isn't Laura Gnau's favorite color, she has investigated its relationship with feminism for a few months.

My whole thesis is based on how there are two opposing definitions on what feminism is and how it influences culture

she said. I'm comparing two opposing views on the color pink and being a woman: weakness and what I found to be strength.

Gnau painted a room bright pink and used a flower to juxtapose the light from the walls. She also created a book that integrates typography with the meaning of pink and femininity.

The group has named the exhibit Best By: 05 29 10 because May 29 is the last day the Graphic Design Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition will be open. The seniors consider the show to be an expiration date of their time together in class and studio.

We work so hard

Gnau said. I don't know the dynamics of the other programs

but we are very

very dedicated and incredibly passionate designers. We always up the ante when it comes down to doing a project

and we definitely go beyond expectations.

The exhibit is open from 7 to 9 tonight and continues until the expiration date. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
