Gala concert to end year on high note

Two departments within the School of Music will celebrate Russian music in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium tomorrow night.

The Ohio University Choirs and University Symphony Orchestra will unite for a gala concert event to wrap up the spring music season.

Conducted by Director of Orchestras Steven Huang, and Director of Choral studies Peter Jarjisian, the three-piece event will include a collaboration piece by the groups and two other compositions performed separately.

For the piece that combines both sets of musicians, the chorus will sing in Russian, and subtitles will be provided so that the audience can follow along.

It's the centerpiece of what we're doing

Huang said, adding that the concert will showcase the talents of more than 300 musicians. There will be a lot of people making sound on stage.

Even though this event happens every year, the group starts planning in September and always tries to do something different, Huang said.

Everybody gets together for this one event that celebrates music in Athens he said. I can't think of anything else like this on campus. I'm always excited about this performance.

In addition to Huang and Jarjisian, who will direct the works for their respective disciplines, Canes Nicolas, a first-year graduate student studying orchestral conducting, has the responsibility of conducting the first piece.

This University Symphony orchestra performance is the fourth for Nicolas, a native of Haiti.

He said that the experience of leading an entire group of performers as a student can be challenging but meaningful.

It can be frustrating to get up in front of your peers because you don't know what to expect Nicolas said. But I find it enjoyable. ...It's a good experience.

Huang said that the experience is beneficial for the musicians and Athens residents who attend the concert.

This really shows what we can do

he said. It give us the energy to finish the year with momentum and excitement

and it ends the year with a bang.
