For the first time, Ohio University's Multicultural Center is collaborating with Hocking College students and faculty on an art exhibition.
The Multicultural Art Gallery has previously worked with the Appalachian Peace and Justice Network, Arts for Ohio and Ohio University Libraries and is now featuring pieces born from the hands of Hocking College students.
We just think it's not only a good collaboration for OU and Hocking
but it's also good community outreach said Winsome Chunnu, Multicultural Center assistant director and coordinator of the event.
The exhibit features about 55 pieces from students in the art program at Hocking College. The college offers an associate's degree in art that incorporates the students' chosen media with a strong emphasis in business.
Mark Hackworth, the coordinator of the art design and marketing program at Hocking College, said that courses are designed to accelerate the student's studio work. The program is only two years, so the students are in the studio from the very beginning.
Hocking College art faculty chose the student work on display in the gallery. There was no number or limit to how many works one artist could have, however the teachers picked the work that they felt best represented the media, said Hackworth.
Second-year ceramics student Jacqueline Green is one of the artists. Her two sculptures have interwoven orange tubes sprouting from a charred and cobbled base that harkens to the scene in FernGully where the polluting villain tries to take over the rainforest.
I'm really excited to show my work off said Green, who added that she aspires to one day own a gallery of her own.
The show opened on April 6 and will run until June 10. The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
