International Street Fair lets students experience cultures

Cultural diversity filled up Court Street Saturday during the 28th annual International Street Fair.

Approximately 30 booths of food, crafts and entertainment from around the world lined the street in the afternoon. Both local and student organizations participated in the event organized by Ohio University as a part of International Week. There were attractions for all ages including tables with crafts and balloon animals for children, homemade clothing, jewelry and food from around the world.

Juniors Anna Roberto and Morgan Augur enjoyed grilled corn with soy sauce from one of the booths.

We came last year and tried this and loved it

Augur said.

We came to the fair specifically for the corn Roberto added.

The African Student Union sold brightly colored homemade jewelry and clothing from Mali and Ghana as one of its members beat on an African drum.

The Southeast Asian Studies Association booth featured countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia and East Timor.

When people come to our table they are interested in playing Deacon

said Nurenzia Yannuar, a second-year graduate student. It is a board game that people play in Southeast Asia for fun.

A crowd gathered for live entertainment at the intersection of Court and Washington streets. Upcoming International Student Union president Arin Hening announced each performer. She explained a dance called the Soran-Bushi, a performance sponsored by the Japanese Student Union.

The dance is a fisherman's dance; it portrays all the actions that a fisherman would do

Hening said.

Some students said they enjoyed learning about other cultures.

I'm so glad I have the opportunity to experience something this diverse while I'm at school

said student Mark Mancini. It's so interesting to see all the different cultures on one street.
