When Lo Martinez and Aleena Bhattacharya tried to fit music classes into their schedule, the requirements were too demanding; however, the two Ohio University students soon found an alternative.
Tempo Tantrums, an all-female, extracurricular a cappella group, will make an appearance at the A Cappella Invitational Saturday at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
It's all about pure
unadulterated love for music and the art of singing said Martinez, a freshman studying journalism.
The choir, composed of 16 women, has been together for two years and receives no funding from OU. The members rely on one another to arrange and rehearse the music.
The part that appealed to me was the people and that the group is completely student-run said Bhattacharya, a senior studying philosophy and pre-law.
Whoever arranges a piece directs it or recruits someone else to direct, said Stephanie Dumais, a senior studying music education and flute performance. She added that this minimizes the group's expenses.
During rehearsal, each member of the choir is free to make comments and suggestions as the women work together to achieve the desired sound.
We're always on the same page with musicality
and auditions are based on personality too
Dumais said. We want people who enjoy music.
The audition process takes place in the fall, and information can be found at the Student Involvement Fair Sept. 6. All female OU students are welcome to audition, and returning members audition again every year.
Tempo Tantrums have performed at open mic nights, at the International Women's Day festival and for the OU Board of Trustees. The chorus' next on-campus concert will be at the A Cappella Invitational. The event, hosted by the Singing Men of Ohio's Section 8, will also feature Heart of Worship, Leading Tones and Title IX.
Martinez said the choir's passion for singing would be evident in the performance, just as it is at rehearsal.
Every time at practice
everyone is there because they want to be there. There are no ulterior motives
she said. It's just a pure love of music
and that's rare to find in college.
