Movie inspired by 'SNL' skit brings raunchy humor to the big screen

Raunchy and ridiculous, MacGruber is exactly what a Saturday-Night-Live-sketch-turned-feature-film should be.

First appearing on the show in 2007, MacGruber mocks the long-running 1980s television show MacGyver about a man who could get himself out of sticky situations. The character of MacGyver refused to use a gun. Instead, he makes helpful devices out of the everyday items he found around himself. One famous example is the bomb MacGyver made out of a paper clip and a chewing gum wrapper.

Because of the illogical and overblown premise of MacGyver, it was easy for SNL to translate the show into a sketch and then a film. Starring Will Forte as MacGruber and Kristen Wiig as his sidekick Vicki St. Elmo, the movie revolves around the premise of MacGruber trying to take revenge on his greatest arch nemesis, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer) with the help of Vicki and CIA Special Operations Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe).

As should be expected, and similar in style to other SNL-inspired movie such as The Ladies Man and the classic Wayne's World films, MacGruber is full of toilet humor and double entendres. And because MacGyver was popular in the 1980s, mullet jokes and cheesy power ballads are thrown in for good measure.

If this kind of humor tickles your funny bone, you will definitely enjoy MacGruber. If not, this film will more likely turn your stomach.

Speaking of stomach turning, there is also a lot of violence in this film, as guns make an appearance, despite MacGruber's and MacGyver's refusal to use the firearms. So you should not see this film if you have a finicky stomach. Other than that, MacGruber is another example of low-brow American comedy at its finest.
