Ohio Valley Symphony closes season at OU

The Ohio Valley Symphony in Gallipolis is marking its 20th birthday this year and will be performing tonight with the Ohio University choirs in its special celebration.

Under the direction of Maestro Ray Fowler, the symphony will perform pieces with the University Singers, the Singing Men of Ohio and the Women's Chorale.

According to Peter Jarjisian, director of choral studies in the School of Music who will be co-directing with Fowler, this event was planned more than a year ago.

In addition, four high school choirs have been invited to attend: the Delaware Hayes Symphonic, the Gallia Academy Madrigals, the Little Miami High School Women's Chorale and the Logan High School Chamber Choir.

While the university singers and symphony rehearse during the day, the high school students will take part in activities that have been planned for them before they take part in the concert as well.

It's a really nice educational day

Jarjisian said.

The symphony will open the performance by playing two pieces alone. Then, they will combine with the university singers to perform another composition. All participants, including the high school students, will conclude the show together.

You're getting three different ways that we can mix and match this Fowler said. He used to work at OU with Jarjisian 20 years ago and said that he's wanted to work with him and the OU choirs.

Both directors feel that the performance is a great way to close the Ohio Valley Symphony's season.

I think the audience will enjoy themselves Jarjisian said.

Fowler added that he's expecting a huge audience and wouldn't be surprised if the performance is sold out.

This is a huge celebration

he said. What a way to end a birthday.
