Performance art group confronts issues with mothers

The members of the F-Word Ladies and Gents will be showcasing the different emotions and experiences they have had with their mothers on Sunday at Scripps Amphitheater during their show MILF, Mom I'd Like to F-Word.

This will be the performance art group's second performance and first with its new name. The group was originally called The F-Word Ladies, but after several men showed interest in joining the name was changed to Ladies and Gents. The F-Word in the name of the group and the show does not refer to any specific word, but can stand for anything, said one of the group's founding members, sophomore theater major Jessica Link.

In this show the F-Word stands for many different things

Link said. For some of the performers it's mom I'd like to forget; for others it's mom I'd like to forgive. It can mean anything.

The group's main goal is to express emotions and experiences that most people do not feel comfortable sharing, through art.

The F-Word Ladies and Gents decided to devote this show to mothers after realizing that most group members had strong experiences with their mothers that needed to be expressed, Link said.

This show includes pieces which cover a lot of different emotions. There are very jarring pieces and there are very happy pieces Link said. It's great to see the different experiences people have with the women who created them.

The show will include a variety of pieces including poetry, comedy, monologues and pieces that include movement. Junior Arianna Iliff, a sociology major, said this show is a chance for people to turn their emotions into art.

This show is a great outlet to express anger joy

a whole myriad of emotions regarding our moms that may not have been expressed before

Iliff said. We've been able to take these expressions and make art out of them.

The F-Word Ladies and Gents hope this performance encourages others to confront their past experiences, said Bethany Francis, a founding member and senior theater performance major.

I hope people are inspired to talk about these issues

Francis said. Using art as a fuel to talk about these things is really powerful and important.

The performance is free, but donations will be taken for the La Leche League of Athens, which provides information for women who are breast-feeding. At the end of the show audience members will also be invited to share their own experiences.
