As an OU alumnus, I read with great dismay The Post's May 6th editorial, To the huddle. To use that great phrase: What are you smoking? Let me get this right. Even though the Editorial Board does not know if the numbers would mean saving or losing money in the long run
by eliminating the football program, the Editorial Board goes on to propose that OU seriously restructure athletics from intercollegiate to club sports. What? May I suggest a tour of Antioch College for the Editorial Board. There you will find how such radical intellectual ideas ruined a university.
Rather than viewing athletics as an intangible the fact of the matter is that it is part of the rich history and tradition of OU that makes OU a great Midwestern university. The Post takes a shot at the athletic department even while the football, basketball and volleyball programs enjoy success. Usually such shots are taken when the programs are losing.
OU will continue and thrive long after the Editorial Board graduates and leaves Athens, and then returns, to enjoy its tradition as alumni. Yes, the budget problems need addressed. But, dropping from Division I-A would be a great blow and make OU a laughing stock.
