Post Letter: Students should vote in favor of Honor Code

To the Ohio University student body:

Last spring, Student Senate passed a resolution in favor of affirming a revised draft of the Ohio University Honor Code. This spring, you can vote to accept the proposed Honor Code as the official honor code of Ohio University. The Honor Code - not to be confused with the Student Code of Conduct - was put into effect by some members of Student Senate who have decided to come together with other students to promote and pass along information about the Honor Code that we feel will make Ohio University a valuable and more respected part of our world.

The Honor Council is composed of two Student Senate members, a student trustee and other students selected from a pool of applicants. The council is advised by Ryan Lombardi, OU dean of students. What began as a Student Senate initiative has become a goal of many to take action to improve the college experience of all Ohio University students.

The Honor Code is a guide to being an honest and positive part of this university while influencing younger students in positive ways. The main points of the Honor Code are academic integrity and social and civic responsibility.

Here are some ways Ohio University will change with the influence of the Ohio University Honor Code:

1. An increased awareness of the positive effects of fairness and honesty in the classroom.

2. A greater respect for oneself through the instilling values of self-respect and integrity.

3. A greater sense of community that will bring OU students and Athens city members closer. Students will have a greater discipline for volunteering, recycling and respecting those around them.

The Honor Council encourages you to vote yes May 20 when you can determine whether to accept the Honor Code. To read the Honor Code and learn more, please visit www.ohio.edu/students/honor_code, or contact the Honor Council at ouhonorcouncil@gmail.com. Thank you for your time, and make sure to vote in the 2010 Student Senate Elections.
