Scripps dean finds rating rewarding',Ohio University's Scripps College of Communication dean saw his faculty approval ratings rise this year

given the current budget climate.,Editor's Note: This is the third in a seven-part series examining the evaluations of Ohio University's deans. Seven of 10 Athens deans were evaluated this year.

Ohio University's Scripps College of Communication dean saw his faculty approval ratings rise this year

a feat he said he is particularly proud of given the current budget climate.

The fact that faculty are able to appreciate the job you're doing, especially in tough times, is rewarding, Dean Greg Shepherd said.

Shepherd's faculty gave him an 86 percent approval rating this year up from 80 percent last year. The response rate was 43 percent this year

compared to 18 percent last year.

Shepherd is in his sixth year as dean and earns $195

700 in base salary.

The dean laid out four goals for this year revolving around enrollment and retention

becoming a Center of Excellence, making progress on renovating Old Baker Center and hiring additional tenure-track faculty. Becoming a Center of Excellence would place the Scripps College as one of the top communication programs in the state.

Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit praised Shepherd's progress on all those fronts.

You and your colleagues have worked hard to position Scripps to take advantage of the exceptional opportunities presented by the changing communication and media landscape, Benoit wrote.

For the second year in a row

Shepherd's highest faculty ratings came in external relations

where he is judged on how well he represents the college to outsiders. In that category

Shepherd received only positive comments and an overall 94 percent approval rating.

His lowest approval rating was in shared governance

which

based on faculty comments
