Track: No luck for Bobcats on day 1 of regional meet

Ohio had the majority of its athletes compete in the first day of the NCAA East Regional track meet last night.

Senior Bahiyjaui Allen competed in the shot put and Kari Summers and Annie Beecham competed in the 10,000-meter run.

In the shot put, Allen was unable to continue her season as she finished 20th in the event with a throw of 15.30 meters.

Only the top 16 in the event moved on to qualify for the finals, and the top 12 from there advanced to the NCAA Championships.

We wanted more out of it and have her place in the top 16

said head coach Clay Calkins. It was her second-best performance of the season so we are not too upset.

The 10,000-meter run was pushed back from its originally scheduled time of 9:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. because of the heat.

The heat proved to be too much for Beecham as she could not finish due to heat exhaustion. Summers finished 23rd with a time of 36 minutes, 15.70 seconds.

Beecham did not finish a race at the regional meet for the second consecutive year. Last season, she failed to finish the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Mideast Regional at Cardinal Park at the University of Louisville.

It was a hot night Calkins said. They did their best but it fell short.
