Track: Senior sets team-best mark at Ohio Open

Sometimes when a team competes in an event that does not keep team scoring, it is hard to get a good idea of how well it performed. For the Ohio women Saturday, that was not the case.

As hosts of the Ohio Open, the Bobcats dominated the field at Goldsberry Track. Bobcat athletes took first in 12 events.

Senior Emily Amendola set a team-best mark in the discus throw with a distance of 46.78 meters. She also won the hammer throw and placed second in the shot put.

Amendola's runner-up score in the shot put was second to fellow senior Bahiyjaui Allen, who won the event with a toss of 14.13 meters.

Currently, Allen is ranked fourth in the Mid-American Conference shot put standings with a best toss of 15.13 meters.

Freshman Alexis Geiger took first in three events Saturday. She won both the long jump and the triple jump, posting distances of 5.71 meters and 10.56 meters, respectively.

Geiger also came in second place in the 100-meter dash (12.92 seconds) and was part of the winning 4x100 relay squad.

Lauren Moore, Kiley Mathews, and Kristi Sturges joined Geiger in the relay. They posted a collective time of 48.80 seconds.

Sturges, a junior from Parma, Ohio, had success in other events as well. She came in third place in both the long jump and the triple jump, and won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.89 seconds.

Geiger and Sturges seemed to compete intensely against each other in some running and jumping events.

That competition is in no way a bad thing, Sturges said.

I love having Alexis there to push me in practice

Sturges said She's a great teammate.
