Yesterday, Ohio University students tried bull riding, bungee jumping and skydiving in the Adams Hall parking lot.
Xtreme, an event hosted by the Campus Involvement Center, was a part of Senior Week, which will continue with other activities through Thursday.
We are trying something new. We went with the extreme idea and found extreme things
said Brian Heilmeier, a graduate student who helped organize the event.
In addition to the air wind tunnel, bull riding and rock-climbing wall, Xtreme also included jousting and a boxing ring provided by the athletic department.
Although activities like the euro bungee gathered a crowd, the wind tunnel was the most popular, with a wait time of more than an hour at one point.
Jason Gillette, a senior studying digital media, stood in line for about half an hour before entering the wind tunnel.
It's great. Worth the wait Gillette said.
Despite being a Senior Week event, the requirements for the wind tunnel set-up prevented Xtreme from being located in an area more accessible for upperclassmen who live off-campus.
We needed a big area and the skydive requires a flat
hard surface
Heilmeier said. But it's loud enough. People will come down.
The noise did draw some students, but the advertising in Baker University Center grabbed the attention of others.
I saw the sign in Baker for a wind tunnel
said Adam Murray, a senior studying industrial technology. And down in the corner I saw it was for Senior Week.
To participate, students had to register for all of the activities by signing waivers for both the university and the company providing the equipment, said Trevor Mannausa, a graduate student in the Campus Involvement Center.
By 7:30 p.m., 300 people had registered for the event.
One of the registrants, Emily Mohn, a freshman studying fine arts, hovered about 7 feet above a plane propeller in the wind tunnel.
My adrenaline was pumping and there was lots of drooling. It was amazing
Mohn said.
