Casa hosts release of fresh new 'Fish' album

Local bands Mind Fish and Earwig will mark the releases of their new albums simultaneously tomorrow with a concert at Casa Cantina.

Lizard McGee, Earwig's lead singer and guitarist, said that the band's new record, Gibson Under Mountain, was inspired by his dreams over the past few years.

I often dream-write songs or hear tunes

melodies and get ideas for music from my dreams. All of the songs on the new record came in some form from dreams of mine McGee said.

This is a big record for us. We've been working on it for two years and our last single got a lot of exposure. ... This is our follow up said McGee, who runs the sound board during local shows.

McGee met Dean Tartaglia, Mind Fish's lead vocalist, at an Athens club while he was working, was immediately impressed by the younger band and has been in communication with him ever since.

Tartaglia initially saw Earwig perform in the winter of 2009 and said that it was the first local band that he was truly impressed with.

A couple months later (Mind Fish) were in our rougher times when things weren't going too great. We were doing some pretty (bad) shows over at 19 South

and (McGee) was running sound there

Tartaglia said. He started giving me advice about the business side of things

something I'd never thought about in depth before. ... He helped us out.

Tartaglia said that the band's new album, Measles, Mumps and Rebellion, has a pop rock opera feel and that the album relies heavily on its lyrics.

The album is a cheesy story about a young man in obscurity trying to find his place in the world. It's supposed to be cliché

he said. It's about becoming the greatest pop star that Athens has ever seen

which I hope I might actually be able to hold that claim to fame at this point.

Four songs off Gibson Under Mountain are available for free online at earwig.bandcamp.com, and Mind Fish has songs available for download at reverbnation.com/themindfish.
