OU suspends football player who skipped town

Ohio University suspended a football player from the team Wednesday after the man, charged with a felony, skipped town.

Defensive lineman Melvin Payne has been suspended indefinitely from the football team, said Jason Corriher, assistant athletics director for media relations.

Payne faces a second-degree felony trespassing charge for breaking into 159 Mill St. over the weekend, according to Municipal Court records.

When police arrived at Weld House to arrest him this past weekend, they discovered that he had left town on a Greyhound bus. As of today, Payne's whereabouts remain unknown.

Athens County Municipal Court Judge William Grim issued a second warrant for Payne after his absence in court.

Grim set the Mobile, Ala., native's bail at $25,000. Payne cannot pay 10 percent to get out of jail, according to court documents.
