After bad times, Goody's reopens in Athens today

After a more than yearlong hiatus, a clothing store for juniors will reopen in Athens today, but will now be located in The Market on State.

Goody's Family Clothing, 1005 E. State St., is holding its grand reopening today after leaving Athens in early 2009. Goody's Supervisor James Appel said he hopes to attract 700 to 1,000 customers to the event with discounts, coupons and prize drawings.

The store was previously located at 743 E. State St., but left because Goody's Family Clothing, Inc., went bankrupt in 2009, Appel said. He added that Stage Stores bought the Goody's name and decided to bring it back to Athens.

(Goody's) was there before

and we're very glad to have it back said Brent Hayes, co-owner of The Market on State, 1002 E. State St.

Goody's sells clothing, shoes, fragrances and accessories for both male and female juniors, Goody's District Manager Fannie Kelley said.

Adding Goody's into The Market on State will hopefully bring more business to the area, Kelley said.

More stores - especially good stores - bring more people in and help the current tenants Hayes said.

Store managers hope to get younger customers because it is a college town, Kelley said.

Although Ohio University sophomore Erica Armstrong said she had never heard of Goody's, she said she was excited about a new store opening in town.

There is not a lot of shopping in Athens

so I do a lot of online shopping

said Armstrong, a hearing, speech and language sciences major.

Preparation to open the store in its new location began more than a month ago, Appel said, adding that 30 to 40 people were hired for seasonal positions and the staff has spent the last week setting up merchandise.

For the grand reopening, the store will open at 9 a.m. and all merchandise will be 15 percent off, Kelley said. She added that customers can register to win three $250 gift cards, a basket of perfume and coupons for an extra 50 percent off.
