While most babysitters do their best to keep their charges quiet, Sasha Colette's encouraged her to make noise.
Colette's sitter, along with members of her church, introduced her to singing and the piano before she eventually picked up the guitar at age 12.
That was my own instrument
Colette said. My parents weren't pushing me to practice and I felt free to write songs.
Colette and her songwriting will take the stage tomorrow night at Jackie O's Pub and Brewery, 24 W. Union St., along with her band The Magnolias.
The self-proclaimed folk, indie and blues artist from Olive Hill, Ky. counts singer-songwriters Nick Drake and Paul Simon, and British rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees as her musical influences.
Colette especially admires Banshees' vocalist Siouxsie Sioux's honesty.
She's so out there; she takes what she has and throws it at the world Colette said.
In her own performances, Colette throws in a cappella tunes, soulful vocals, banjo picking and heavy jamming. Her favorite song to perform is a fun
bluesed-up version of Walking After Midnight by Patsy Cline.
Everyone can relate to being torn up night after night
and it gives some room to wail on
Colette said.
There will be plenty of Colette's own music as well.
Her band, The Magnolias, includes Jose Oreta, who Colette describes as the brother of the band, on upright bass as well as multi-instrumentalist Bud Carroll. Colette met Oreta through a circle of musician friends, and the two began performing as a duo before picking up Carroll.
Carroll, who Colette calls a Jack of all trades musician
is also performing tomorrow night with his own band, Bud Carroll & The Southern Souls.
Sasha Colette & The Magnolias released an EP called Three Songs, No Waiting this past June, and the band is working on a new album due in December. The studio time has helped make the group more solid, but it has been together for so long that it is enjoyable as well.
It's difficult to not have a good time
Colette said.
