Couch-burning suspect reaches plea deal

An Ohio University sophomore pleaded guilty Tuesday to disorderly conduct charges stemming from his actions at Palmerfest last spring.

Cameron Soergel, 20, was charged with aggravated rioting after lighting a couch on fire at Palmerfest May 8, according to court documents.

Soergel was arrested after being identified from his picture on the Athens Police Department's website. APD posted pictures of seven people wanted in connection with the couch fire and asked citizens to leave anonymous tips, according to previous articles in The Post.

Soergel agreed to plead guilty to disorderly conduct instead of being found guilty of aggravated rioting, which is a fourth degree felony and carries a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison and a maximum fine of $5,000 if convicted, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

By entering into the plea agreement, Soergel's charge was lowered to one count of disorderly conduct, a fourth degree misdemeanor. Soergel was sentenced to 30 days in jail and a fine of $250, according to court documents.

He will not have to spend any time in jail if he remains a law abiding citizen for two years, pays $150 of his fine within 30 days, pays $3,000 of restitution to the City of Athens and pays all his court costs within 30 days, according to court documents.

Soergel also was ordered to stay away from Palmer Street and write a letter of apology to his parents, according to the documents.
