The Ohio cross country team will participate in its second meet of the season when it travels to the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational today in Blacksburg, Va.
The Bobcats are coming off a home meet in which both the men and women took first place, a feat accomplished without the talents of several top performers.
Redshirt seniors Kari Summers, Annie Beecham and Abigail Swift all rested last week, and the trio brings quick legs and years of experience to today's meet.
They've been doing a great job in the workouts
and they had a great summer of training coach Clay Calkins said. With them being fifth year seniors that's a nice thing to bring to the table for the rest of the team.
Juniors Hannah Charbel and Kristen Altenburger will also run their first official race of the season, and several of last week's top freshmen will perform alongside them.
For the men, redshirt senior Ridge Robinson returns this week. Calkins said Robinson was the only key runner to miss last week's Ohio Open.
Seniors Scott Meyers and Chris Davis and junior Joey Cherico all ran last week and will again today.
Meyers won the meet last week, crossing the line in 15 minutes, 40.08 seconds.
Cherico posted the best Ohio time at last year's event. He ran the 7.6 kilometer race in 25:07, finishing 19th overall.
Besides the host Hokies, Wake Forest, Concord University, Lynchburg College and Bluefield College will attend the meet.
The level of competition is going to be bit a more challenging than it was last week
Calkins said. Virginia Tech and Wake Forest have always had quality programs.
We know that going into the meet, and it's always good to mix it up with those caliber teams and see how you
end up.

I passed the Jeff Hill construction area today and made an interesting observation:
1) There are no storm drains for the entire length of Jeff Hill.
2) The first storm drain is directly in front of Jeff Hall and that is a very far distance from the base of Jeff Hill.
3) The next time there is a major rain
the area at the base of Jeff Hill will be flooded
It's clear to me the Athens Engineering Dept. is worthless.
- Mike
Three things go into deciding where to put storm drains:
The type of road
the slope of the road and the size of the drainage area.
When a hill is as steep as Jeff Hill
all the water rushes to the bottom very quickly. The water is moving down the hill so fast
it would just roll over the drains and they wouldn't catch much. During the past 100 years
