Nothing attracts college students like free food and, of course, a giant inflatable Moon Bounce. Slice of Athens, which took place on South Beach last Friday, offered fresh, free and local pizza to an estimated 1,000 Ohio University students.
It's kind of college in a nutshell
said University Programming Council (UPC) Public Relations Executive Andrea Teggart, a senior studying public relations.
UPC and the Black Student Cultural Programming Board (BSCPB) coalesced to bring students the second annual Slice of Athens, a free event that offers pizza, an inflatable Moon Bounce and an opportunity to better understand the two campus organizations.
Six local vendors delivered the pizza: Papa John's, Hungry Howie's, Donatos, Little Caesars, Goodfellas and Domino's. They provided the pizza in order to raise student awareness about local pizza businesses. Hungry Howie's brought a school bus advertising their pizza, and Little Caesars handed out wristbands and balloons.
It's my first weekend here so I didn't know where to buy pizza said freshman dance major Emma Rumberg. Now I know where to go.
Because the organizations didn't pay for pizza, Teggart said they united to pay around $200 dollars for a DJ and $1,000 to rent an inflatable Moon Bounce, filled with students performing flips, pirouettes and cannonballs.
You can't miss that. It's attention-grabbing
said UPC Film and Cultural Arts Executive Samantha Fink, a junior studying public relations.
Beyond the jovial spirit of the event, Slice of Athens demonstrated the ability of multiple campus organizations to work together, said BSCPB adviser Winsome Chunnu, who is also assistant director of the Multicultural Center.
It introduces students to our organizations in a relaxed and fun way and allows them to see that we bring multi-faceted events to campus
Chunnu said.
Each organization hosts 10 to 15 events a year, including speakers and other educational events in addition to more social events such as Slice of Athens.
Each group has such different audiences that it's great to combine them for this event
Teggant said.
