Gelatinus Cube brings 4th album, 8 years of experience to Smiling Skull

When Pat Chase and Tim Swanson were on a Boy Scout camping trip at age 14, they decided to form a band. Eight years later, their band Gelatinus Cube, named after a video game in the movie Wayne's World, will be playing in Athens.

The band members - Chase (vocals and guitar), Swanson (guitar, piano and vocals), Sean Castanien (keyboard, saxophone and percussion), John Saige (bass) and Mike Daull (drums) - attend The Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College, Chase said. Tomorrow night, Mike Hayes, producer and engineer of all the Gelatinus Cube albums, will fill in for Daull on drums.

At tomorrow's show at The Smiling Skull Saloon, 108 W. Union St., the band will give away free copies of its fourth album, 2009's Whaleplane, Chase said.

Castanien described the band's sound as rock with various influences, like The Beatles, Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Mr. Bungle and Radiohead.

Basically

we sound like if you took all of our influences and have them have a jam session he said.

When it comes to the live show, Castanien's favorite Gelatinus Cube song to play is Sling Low.

It is a really interesting experiment one where I get to put effects on Winston Churchill's 'Iron Curtain' speech

he said.

The band plays mostly originals because of all the material it has produced over the years, Chase said.

We have been a band for eight years

and our fifth album (Mr. Sensible) is 90 percent done

he said.

Chase said he always enjoys playing in Athens.

I think the Athens music scene is really cool

he said. It is a blast to go down there.
