High School Football: Local coaches determine weak areas after first games of season

After a 0-2 start to the season, Athens head coach Ryan Adams said his team will increase the intensity of its practices to clean up mistakes the Bulldogs made during the past two weeks.

We're going to run the perfect ten in practice

Adams said. We're going to run a play until we do it without a miscue 10 times in a row. If we make a mistake we're going to start over and do it again.

Adams said he's not happy with the way his team has executed on offense, adding that they need to take care of the little things in order to make big things happen.

After playing well in parts of each of their first two games, Adams wants his team to execute for an entire 48 minutes.

We need to pay more attention to detail and make sure all 11 guys are on their assignments at all times he said.

Athens will face Warren this Friday, a team that has outscored its opponents 84-18 during the first two weeks.

We need to stay fundamentally sound on defense and make sure we swarm to the ball

Adams said.

Buckeyes look to bounce back

Despite leading for more than two quarters of the game last week, Nelsonville-York couldn't pull out the victory against Newark Catholic, falling 13-9. Coach David Boston said his team will focus on limiting turnovers, especially in the red zone.

Nelsonville-York led Newark Catholic 9-7 with nine minutes remaining in the contest. But, the Green Wave scored on a 17-play, 62-yard drive in which they converted three fourth-down plays to rally for the win.

We need to take care of ourselves and cut down on a lot of mistakes we made last week

Boston said.

Defensively, Boston said, his team is playing well. He is particularly happy with the play of linebackers Isaiah Andrews and Justin Cunningham.

After rushing for more than 200 yards against Trimble in week one, running back Dustin Young was held to only 57 yards on 18 carries against the Green Wave.

The Buckeyes will look to rebound as they travel away from home for the first time to face Berne Union (0-2).

Arno keeping team focused

Although his team has jumped out to a 2-0 start, Alexander coach Sean Arno says there are still plenty of things the Spartans need to improve before Friday.

The biggest thing we have been working on is our line play

Arno said. Our offensive line needs to learn to work together to create running holes for the entire game.

The defense, however, has impressed the coach. The unit forced four turnovers last week against Huntington-Ross, something he says it has worked on in practice.

Arno is also happy with the way some of the younger players have performed in the absence of three seniors that missed last week's game.

The Spartans will continue to be without injured starting running back Cody Lawson as they face Unioto this weekend.

Trimble trying to recover

The Trimble Tomcats have mustered just 12 points in two losses - one in which they were the preseason favorite to win the Tri-Valley Conference-Hocking.

Coach Phil Faires said the team must do a better job mentally preparing themselves for games.

We have a lot of seniors

and those guys need to take control in the locker room

Faires said.

Last week against Wahama, the Tomcats were not able to find any sort of offensive or defensive rhythm before halftime, which led to a 14-0 halftime deficit before showing signs of progress during the second half.

Running back Tyler Dyla rushed for 110 total yards, a step up after being held to 31 yards in week one.

This week, the Tomcats will focus on their conditioning and getting healthy before Friday's game against South Gallia (1-1).
