Hip-Hop Congress will continue its mission of conserving hip-hop culture at Ohio University tonight when it hosts Hip-Hopalooza at The Union.
HHC, run by Sydney Epps, a senior studying journalism and sociology, puts on large programs throughout the school year and sponsors annual events such as the Hip-Hop Expo.
Hip-Hopalooza is being sponsored by HHC and 1Side Music, a record label owned by Christopher Summers, a junior studying Audio Production and treasurer of HHC. Summers, who will be DJing at the event, goes by the name DJ iShine.
It is meant to be a fun night with good vibes
hip-hop and donations to charity Summers said. The name kind of found itself.
In addition to educating the student body about local artists, all donations and proceeds from the event will be given to Good Works, Inc., of Athens.
Instead of appointing one of its own to MC the event, HHC chose Micah Spencer, a junior studying philosophy and psychology. She is also a poet and has performed spoken word at the Union for the past two years under the name Awair'nyss.
It is a great honor Spencer said. I appreciate the fact that they chose me
considering that many people don't consider spoken word a part of Hip Hop.
Teuro is the first artist slated to perform at 10 p.m. Other artists that are scheduled to perform are DC King of Hearts and CG of 1Side Music, Jay Adonde, DJ Mafia, Eddie Franks, Trademark Aaron, Solo and Dysfunktional Family. OU emcee Jean P. Johnson will close out the concert at 1:10 am.
DJ Vik MRDA and DJ iShine will be handling all the audio for the evening.
Summers said that HHC is expecting Hip-Hopalooza to be a launching point for even larger events in the future.
