Alexander running back Cody Lawson was not supposed to get many touches tonight. But after his first carry, the Spartans couldn't keep the ball out of his hands..
Three weeks ago, the senior dislocated his elbow, and the large cast on his arm led many to believe that he would struggle. But his 14 carries, 134 yards and three touchdowns led the Spartans to a 41-26 victory against Frontier.
It was pretty pleasurable to watch those kids tonight
head coach Sean Arno said.
Lawson first saw action in the Spartans' initial drive when he spelled Benton Milum and ran around a few defenders on his way to an untouched nine-yard touchdown.
After that, he was used mainly as a decoy. Arno continued to utilize Milum, who ended up having 111 yards off 16 carries.
Benton Milum did a great job Arno said. He was called upon for four weeks and in that four weeks he probably has over 400 yards.
His night ended early, though, after he was hit hard in the third quarter. Milum remained on the ground for about 15 minutes, but he moved his arms as he was taken off in an ambulance.
Frontier was starting to gain momentum at the time of Milum's injury, and on Lawson's first carry afterward, he was slammed to the ground late by a Cougars defender.
The play drew a yellow flag from the referee and loud cries from the Alexander side of the field. Players from both sides needed to be separated by game officials.
In the third quarter, Frontier closed to within three, 21-18.
Lawson extended the lead later with another march into the end zone, and the lead became 34-18 when the Spartans converted a fourth-and-nine from the 29-yard line for another touchdown.
That pass went to Trey Bennett, who also had two touchdowns on the ground. He saw time at quarterback, as well, but on that play it was Mike Chapman who threw the ball.
Chapman is another skill player who's dealing with injuries. He left the game with an ankle injury.
The Spartans have been dealing with injuries. But Arno said it's all about fighting through them.
These first four weeks have been about surviving
he said. When we get people back into positions
this offense will have the ability to score a lot of points.
