A Philadelphia man charged with raping an Athens woman he met on the internet was sentenced to 30 years in prison this August.
Charles Nguyen, 32, was convicted Aug. 12 of rape, a first-degree felony; kidnapping, a first-degree felony; aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; and tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.
The charges stemmed from an incident that took place May 9, 2009, according to a previous article in The Post.
The trial began Aug. 3 in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas.
Nguyen was found guilty of all four charges. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for rape, 10 years in prison for kidnapping and 10 years in prison for aggravated burglary charges, according to court documents.
He also was sentenced to five years in prison for the tampering with evidence charge, according to the documents.
Nguyen received the maximum sentence for each of the charges, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
The 10-year sentences will be served consecutively and the 5-year sentence will be served concurrently creating a total of 30 years in prison for Nguyen. He has the possibility of parole after 10 years, according to court documents.
Nguyen will be given credit for the 413 days he already spent in Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.
After his release from prison, Nguyen will be registered as a Tier III Sex Offender for the rest of his life. He will have to verify his location every 90 days and will be on parole for five years, according to the documents.
The earliest Nguyen could be released from prison is 2019.
