Men's Golf: 'Cats prepare for early-season test

It won't be easy for Ohio's men's golf team as plenty of challenges lie ahead at the Marshall Invitational.

The 41st annual two-day event will be played at Guyan Golf Course and Country Club in Huntington, W.V. and will comprise 54 holes, 36 of which will be played today beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The remaining 18 holes will start at the No. 1 and No. 10 tees at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

There's a lot of really good teams there

said coach Bob Cooley. There's going to be a lot of schools that have been in school for a while practicing and playing... We've got our work cut out for us.

Joining the Bobcats at the Invitational are Austin Peay, Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Eastern Kentucky, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Ohio State, Richmond, Toledo, Virginia Tech, William & Mary, Xavier and Wright State.

Inexperience might hurt the Bobcats as Ohio lost four seniors from last season, three of whom were in the starting lineup. Of the 10 golfers on Ohio's roster for this season, six are underclassmen.

Chuck Nettles and Mark Reinhold are Ohio's only two returning seniors.

Ohio golf has also been the recipient of numerous off-season awards and accolades. Junior Paul Grauer won the 2010 Columbus District Golf Association Amateur Championship. As a team, the Bobcats were honored as a 2010 Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team.

Grades are very important to us. Cooley said. We normally are the best on the men's side inside the athletic department and that's one of our priorities.
