Metaphorically Speaking: The Sign Game

Day after day I see people run a stop sign, break the speed limit or cross the street when they have the red hand. What's the point in having these signs? If thought about thoroughly, we easily could relate disobeying the signs of the road to simply ignoring the signs of our everyday lives.

Signs are everywhere, whether they be tangible or not they are chosen to be ignored. The signs that we see have become part of our daily routine in such a way that we have come to ignore them. It seems that most people walk or drive around with the attitude that they could never get a ticket or could never get hurt because these signs don't pertain to them.

A friend told me the other day that you can drive seven miles over the speed limit before a police officer can pull you over. Whether or not that is true I don't know but why must we try to find a way around these signs? Why don't we just go the speed limit that is posted? After all, contrary to the belief speed limits are not suggestions they are the law. We can't go through life looking for little secrets to one up everyone else because, if you base your life on always trying to find a cheat code then you never actually played the game of life.

So is this what happens in life? When a boy hasn't talked to you since the last time you went out or a girl never returned the text that you sent her; does it really come off as a surprise when you spot that person with someone else days later? Signs are there for a reason. They are there to protect you from getting hurt physically and emotionally. Signs are designed not just as suggestions, but meant to keep your mind constantly working and aware of your surroundings.

When someone doesn't return your call or just seem to have disappeared since the last date you went out, they are giving you a sign. When someone looks away after you have said something, they are giving you a sign. People constantly are giving signs in the attempt to get some point across. It could be not responding to a text message, it could be giving someone the finger to express a form of dislike or it could simply be putting a stop sign at a dangerous intersection.

Why does it come as such a surprise to people when disobeying signs eventually catches up and they are left with a fine?
